A friend is a person
to laugh and cry with,
An inspiration,
Someone who lends a helping hand,
though friends may not be forever,
And they may not end up together,
the memories of a true friendship will
last forever.
A friend is not a shadow nor a servant
But someone who hold
a piece of a person in his heart.
Someone who shares a smile,
Someone who brightens up your day

The tradition of friendship day began somewhere around 1935 when the US congress decided to dedicate one day in the honor of friends. With the devastating effects that were caused due to the first world war, there was a lot of hatred and mistrust which could have led to another battle at that time. Hence,there was a need for friendship among countries as well as individuals.
So from that day, US congress decided to celebrate the first sunday of every august as friendship's day. The first to be celebrated was way back in 1935. And soon this day became highly popular among youngsters and people started celebrating it every year.Soon this beautiful idea was caught by other countries too and this day was then celebrated all over the world. And soon it became international friendship's day.
It was in 1997 that United Nations declared Winnie-the Pooh as the ambassador of friendship.
Now a days this festival is celebrated with people exchanging gifts,flowers and friendship bands as a token of friendship.
